Jeremy and Keren spend a lot of religious holidays (Jewish) with her family so often they wind up spending the secular holidays with Jeremy’s family. However, this year they decided they wanted to do things a little differently. Jeremy decided not to spend Thanksgiving with his family, but he also didn’t want to make them feel left out by spending another holiday with Keren’s family, so they decided to go on vacation and spend the holiday just the two of them together.
Jeremy suggested that he plan a surprise destination for Keren, which she (obviously!) agreed to. She had no idea where they were going all the way up until they reached the gate at the airport. She only knew that she needed a winter wardrobe and a passport per Jeremy.
Unbeknownst to Keren, Jeremy had arranged with the flight attendants and the gate attendant that he would propose on the flight over the intercom. Not long after takeoff, Jeremy’s TV monitor on his seat “died”, so he called over one of the flight attendants. She said they had been having problems with that monitor and asked Jeremy to get up while she was trying to “fix” the monitor. Keren didn’t realize it, but when he got up Jeremy was discussing the plans for the proposal with the flight attendants. When he returned to his seat, the flight attendant was able to “reboot” the monitor — and a penguin popped up on the screen!! (Penguin is Jeremy and Keren’s special nickname for each other and the penguin was totally coincidental!)
They watched a movie and had dinner and not long after, Keren had to get up to use the restroom, which Jeremy used as the opportune moment to sneak up into the galley area. When she came back to her seat, Jeremy wasn’t there but Keren just assumed he had gotten up to use the restroom as well. A couple moments later, one of the flight attendants got on the intercom and said that a passenger had a very special announcement to make. Jeremy came out of the galley and started telling the plane full of strangers about how much he loved Keren and how much the last 15 months of them being together meant to him. He then asked Keren to come up to join him, got down on one knee and proposed in front of the airplane full of people. He had given his camera to a couple a few rows back earlier int he flight and they managed to capture the whole thing on video. The rest of the flight they were showered with free champagne and spent the most wonderful 5 days celebrating their engagement in Paris!
Penguins mate for life and what better metaphor than penguins for these two who are so perfectly suited to each other. We know their family and friends agree — lots of love was shown in how all of the details came together for this wedding — here’s Keren own words about some of them and why they were important on this most special of days:
All of our tables are penguin species, rather than numbers, and the guest seating “cards” are river rocks, as a play on how penguins give their mate a stone.
Our dessert table is a cupcake tower (instead of a cake — it does have a small cutting cake on top) with cupcake flavors that were selected based on desserts we love and things that are unique to us. Also, the cake topper is custom ordered ceramic penguins. 🙂 And we will also have mini desserts, which were a gift from the Managing Partner at Season’s 52 (he is signing our ketubah!). Those dessert flavors were also selected based on desserts and foods we love.
Here are the descriptions (don’t know about you but even reading these descriptions makes me want to head on over to Seasons 52):
Award Winning Mini Indulgences by Seasons 52 Tyson’s Corner
Pecan Pie: As good as the original Southern classic, this miniature version of the Pecan Pie is layers of decadent caramel pecan pie filling and creamy vanilla mousse, topped with candied pecans. This one is Keren’s hands down favorite!
Raspberry Chocolate Chip Cannoli: A sweet, creamy ricotta filling with miniature chocolate chips folded in, layered with raspberry sauce and topped with a bite sized cannoli shell. This one is Jeremy’s favorite indulgence!
Chocolate Raspberry Kiss: Love in dessert form! A light, creamy vanilla bean mousse, layered with raspberry puree, chocolate cake, and chocolate syrup, topped with a whipped cream and a chocolate kiss.
Pumpkin Pie: A delicious interpretation of the Thanksgiving favorite, layers of light and creamy pumpkin mousse and ginger snap crust are topped with a ginger snap cookie and whipped cream. This one satisfies Keren’s cravings for all things pumpkin!
Cookies & Cream (No Sugar Added): You wouldn’t know this one was no sugar added unless we told you! Rich, creamy chocolate mousse is layered with sugar free Oreo cookie crumbles and crowned with a sugar free Oreo cookie. If you know Jeremy, you know he loves his Oreos!
Cupcake Tower by Cupcakes Actually
Caramel Mocha: Jeremy and Keren both love coffee, so what would the cupcake tower be without a coffee-inspired cupcake? The delicious chocolate fudge cupcake is filled with rich caramel, iced with a light mocha buttercream, drizzled with a decadent chocolate ganache and caramel, and topped with a coffee bean.
OMG: Read the description and you’ll understand why this cupcake is O.M.G.!!! A light, fluffy banana cupcake filled with rich caramel, iced with a light peanut butter buttercream, dipped in a decadent chocolate ganache, and drizzled with caramel. Oh…My…..Gosh!!!
Cherry Blossom: This cupcake is in honor of Jeremy and Keren’s meeting in Washington, DC, known for its week long Cherry Blossom Festival. A light vanilla cupcake is filled with fresh cherries and crowned with an airy buttercream and a fondant cherry blossom. This cupcake also matches the newlyweds’ Ketubah (marriage document).
Pucker Up: Pucker Up….for a kiss or a cupcake? This succulent lemon cupcake is infused with a tart and velvety lemon curd, topped with a light lemon icing and finished with a mini lemon drop. Not too sweet and not too tart, this cupcake is the perfect palate cleanser at the end of a perfect meal!
Our ketubah is a papercut of cherry blossoms, since we met and fell in love in DC. 🙂 (and it was handmade by Jeremy, Keren and Brandon)
Also, at our table (a sweetheart table), Paris the Penguin will be featured (the penguin that Jeremy proposed to me with, who accompanied us on our engagement photoshoot), and this time, he will be joined by his bride partner! 🙂
We will be updating our status on Facebook as soon as the ceremony is over — because it’s not official until it is Facebook official!!Instead of guest favors, we will have thyroid cancer bracelets at each guest’s place along with a card asking them to wear the bracelet throughout the evening in support of me and other friends and family who have fought/are fighting cancer.
Yes, Keren is a thyroid cancer survivor — we’ve watched as the trials these two have endured have strengthened their love for each other. For this special couple, we wish many, many more years of love and laughter and that their love continues to grow every stronger with each passing year.
